How to Play Corn Hole

People playing cornhole in an outdoor grassy area with trees and wooden barrels.

Objective:
The goal of Corn Hole is to score points by tossing bean bags onto a slanted board, aiming to either land them on the board or get them through the hole for higher points.

Instructions:

Setup:

  • Set up two slanted boards, each with a hole in the center. Place the boards about 27 feet apart for adult play (or closer for shorter distances).

  • Each player or team has four bean bags, either red or blue.

Taking Turns:

  • Players take turns tossing their bean bags, aiming to land them on the board or through the hole.

  • The player who goes first is determined by a coin toss, and players alternate turns throughout the game.

Scoring:

  • Through the hole = 3 points

  • On the board = 1 point

  • If a bean bag lands on the board or goes through the hole, it scores the corresponding points.

  • Only one player or team can score points in each round. To determine the score, subtract the opposing team’s points from your own for that round.

  • Example: If Player A scores 5 points (one bag through the hole and two on the board) and Player B scores 2 points (one bag on the board), Player A earns 3 points for that round.

Winning the Game:

  • The game continues until a player or team reaches exactly 21 points.

  • If a player or team exceeds 21 points, their score is reduced back to 15 points.

Game Tips:

  • Focus on getting bags through the hole for maximum points, but don’t neglect the board, as it can still add to your score.

  • Block your opponent’s attempts to score by strategically placing your bags on the board or near the hole.
